In the Gujarat Titans’ victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (May 7) in Ahmedabad, Rashid Khan displayed some field magic by making an amazing diving catch to take out the dangerous, well-positioned Kyle Mayers.
In response to Gujarat’s huge 227-2 from their 20 overs, Lucknow got off to a strong start with openers Mayers and Quinton de Kock, the latter of whom was playing in his first 2023 IPL match, both getting off to quick starts.
The left-handed pair had pushed Lucknow to 72-0 at the end of the powerplay, reaching the required run rate after scoring 14 runs off Rashid Khan’s first over and 19 runs off Mohammed Shami’s second.
Mohit Sharma’s bowling gave an important breakthrough for Gujarat, who additionally benefited greatly from the outstanding deep-fielding play of Rashid. Mayers tried to draw a slower delivery from Sharma that was buried in the pitch, but the West Indies hitter was unable to do so. Instead, he edged it up into a large space on the leg side. Rashid, who had been placed at deep fine leg, charged in, turned, and dove forward to take a magnificent catch.
One of the best catches I’ve ever seen, Virat Kohli lauded the catch on his Instagram page. Brilliant.”
From that point on, Lucknow struggled and ultimately fell far short of Gujarat’s first-innings total.
As a result, Gujarat, the defending champion, extended their lead over Lucknow, who remain in the third spot before Rajasthan Royals’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad later in the day.
