Pakistan is determined to make its contributions while maintaining the values of the UN Charter, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated in a tweet after thanking the 55-member group for the support and confidence.
In a tweet, the foreign minister wrote: “I thank the members of the Asia Pacific Group at the UN in NY for their support & confidence in unanimously endorsing Pakistan’s candidature to the UN Security Council for the term 2025-2026.”
He added by saying that Pakistan was determined to contribute while preserving the values of the UN Charter. As the endorsed candidate for this region, Pakistan will now run for office. The General Assembly will hold the election for the position in New York in June 2024.
“The unanimous support of the Asia-Pacific Group for Pakistan’s Security Council candidature reflects the general recognition in the international community, including in the Asia-Pacific region, of Pakistan’s positive role in upholding the fundamental purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” the Pakistan envoy said in an interview with APP.
Diplomats said that more than twenty countries made remarks during the Asia Pacific Group summit strongly endorsing Pakistan’s candidacy.
They are Bahrain, China, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lao PDR, Lebanon, Malaysia, Papua Guinea, Qatar, Singapore, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
Ambassadors of China, Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and other nations as well as other delegations praised Pakistan for its dedication to world peace, security, development, and cooperation.
The most recent term for Pakistan on the UN Security Council was in 2013. Pakistan has been elected to the council seven times. Additional occurrences occurred in the years 1952–1953; 1968–1969; 1976–1977; 1983–1984; 1993–1994; and 2003–2004.
Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan, a diplomat from Pakistan, was one of the nations that had a president of the UN General Assembly for a term in 1962.
In hotspots all over the world, Pakistan has been a major contributor to UN peacekeeping missions. In 46 UN missions around the world, Pakistani men and women total more than 200,000. 171 of them gave their lives in the line of duty for the sake of global stability and peace.
