In a World Cup match under rain on Saturday, Pakistan overcame New Zealand by 21 runs using the DLS technique, maintaining their hopes of making it to the semifinals in Bengaluru.
Rain was intermittent, but opener Fakhar Zaman scored an undefeated 126 and captain Babar Azam (66 not out) did an excellent job supporting them during their run chase. After 50 overs, New Zealand had scored 401 for six.
After a brief downpour, Pakistan was given a revised target of 342 in 41 overs. After Pakistan cruised to 200 for one in the 26th over, the rain returned and no more play was allowed.
The Pakistanis gained two crucial points since they were 21 runs ahead of the DLS par score.
Thanks to captain Kane Williamson’s 95 and brilliant 108 from Rachin Ravindra, the Kiwis had looked impressive at the bat.
It was the New Zealanders’ fourth straight loss.
