Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has rejected claims made by the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), reiterating that the strategy for negotiating with the Taliban was devised by former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, News reported.
The statement was relayed by lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, who addressed the media outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Tuesday after a six-member legal team met with the former prime minister.
Chaudhry stated, “Imran Khan’s position is clear—the cases against him and other PTI leaders are politically motivated and lack credibility. These trials are a means of political persecution, not genuine justice.”
He also mentioned that Khan renewed his call for establishing a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and the protests of November 26.
“Our leader is advocating for justice, not concessions, and has set a January 31 deadline to gauge the government’s commitment to meaningful dialogue,” Chaudhry added.
Regarding negotiations with the Taliban, Chaudhry quoted Khan as saying, “The DG ISPR’s claim is inaccurate.
The approach to dealing with the Taliban was crafted by General Bajwa. Dialogue remains the most practical way to address Afghanistan’s challenges.”
Khan criticized the simultaneous use of diplomatic initiatives and aerial bombardments, urging a more consistent policy.
He also condemned military court trials, labeling the resulting sentences as contentious. “These trials lack fairness and transparency. It is imperative to uphold the constitution and protect human rights,” Khan emphasized.
The PTI legal team plans to engage in talks scheduled for January 2, focusing on issues such as electoral processes and constitutional reforms. Chaudhry concluded, “Political instability and mismanagement are severely impacting the nation’s economy.”
