Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched a national initiative to promote organ donation, featuring a new element that adds a special logo to National Identity Cards for voluntary donors.
The program, unveiled on International Identity Day, encourages
citizens to register as organ donors to help save lives. During the event, PM Shehbaz Sharif described organ donation as a “profound act of kindness” that brings hope to those needing transplants.
He urged citizens to join this life-saving cause, noting that donors will be recognized with a unique symbol on their ID cards.
The prime minister stressed the significance of identity in providing access to essential services, calling it “a cornerstone of inclusion, representation, and participation in civic life.”
He also advocated for a collective effort to raise awareness and understanding of identity issues.
In addition, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to address gaps in the national registration and biometric systems and called for adopting digital solutions to improve access and enhance the accuracy of identity verification.
He reaffirmed his government’s dedication to policies promoting transparency and accountability, aiming to strengthen public trust and democratic engagement.
As Pakistan advances with these initiatives, the prime minister urged citizens, civil society, and institutions to collaborate in building a more inclusive society where individual rights are respected.
Earlier this year, the Senate unanimously passed the Human Organ and Tissue Transfer Amendment Bill, 2021, allowing organ donors to be designated on the Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) when issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The bill, moved by Senator Sami Yazdi and supported by Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz senators, was approved in a meeting chaired by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani. Under the new legislation, with the donor’s consent, the designation “organ donor” will be displayed in red on their ID card.
