South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first in the opening T20I against Pakistan at Kingsmead Stadium on Monday.
At the toss, South African captain Heinrich Klaasen expressed confidence in the pitch, stating, “The wicket has been fantastic over the last couple of seasons, and hopefully, we can apply scoreboard pressure. We’re looking to kick off the festive season well tonight and are excited for the guys to seize the opportunity.”
Pakistan made notable changes to their lineup, excluding all-rounder Salman Ali Agha, who had led the team in the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe, from the playing XI.
The match marked the return of Pakistan’s experienced opening pair, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, with Rizwan captaining the white-ball side. Saim Ayub, who had previously been an opener, shifted to the number three position, followed by wicketkeeper-batter Usman Khan.
South Africa also adjusted their lineup. Fast bowler Anrich Nortje was unavailable due to a left big toe contusion, while spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, fresh from the Global Super League, was not considered for selection.
