Shahid Afridi ‘surprised’ by Babar Azam’s return as captain

Shahid Afridi, a former captain, responded to PCB’s choice to reappoint Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white-ball skipper.

After Shaheen Afridi was fired, the former all-round player demanded that Muhammad Rizwan be named the team’s captain.

“I was surprised aback by the selection committee’s decision, which very skilled cricket players made. I still think that Rizwan was the best choice if change was required,” Afridi wrote in a post on X, the website once known as Twitter.

But after Babar Azam was named the white-ball captain again, he added, he gave him all of his support.

Shahid Afridi went on, “Since the decision has been made, I offer my full support and best wishes to team Pakistan and Babar Azam.”

Before the next ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA), PCB restored Babar Azam as the national team’s white-ball captain on Sunday.

Babar Azam’s appointment as captain was officially announced by PCB on social media. The PCB announced, “Babar Azam appointed as white-ball captain.”

“Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has named Babar Azam as the men’s cricket team of Pakistan’s white-ball (ODI and T20I) captain, per the unanimous recommendation of the PCB’s selection committee.”

A five-match home T20I series against New Zealand, starting on April 18 in Rawalpindi, will be his first task during his second term.

Before the team’s miserable showing at the 2023 ICC World Cup, the star hitter had previously led Pakistan in white-ball cricket from 2019 to 2023.
