Sugar to be sold at reduced rates in Ramadan

In anticipation of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, the Pakistani government has announced plans to provide sugar at reduced rates across all districts.

Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that sugar is available at discounted prices during this period.

He stated that sugar stalls will be established three days before the start of Ramadan and will operate until the 27th of the month, ensuring ample supply for the public.

To facilitate this initiative, a micro-plan detailing the distribution of sugar in every district is expected to be unveiled this week. The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has pledged to sell sugar at the lowest possible prices to support public consumption during Ramadan.

The federal minister assured that sufficient quantities of sugar would be available at these stalls, with the cooperation of provincial governments nationwide.

This move comes amid recent concerns over rising sugar prices. In Peshawar, for instance, sugar prices have surged by Rs. 20 per kilogram within a month, reaching Rs. 150 per kilogram, despite the ongoing sugarcane crushing season. Traders have attributed this increase to declining sugarcane output and continuous sugar exports.

In response to these price hikes, Minister Hussain has warned sugar millers and distributors against profiteering and overcharging consumers.

He emphasized that the government will not permit any unnecessary increase in sugar prices during Ramadan and has directed relevant authorities to implement strict measures to stabilize prices and ensure an uninterrupted sugar supply.

A final decision regarding sugar pricing is expected to be announced on February 6, following consultations with sugar mill owners.

Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Ministry of National Food Security to prepare a Ramadan relief package that includes subsidies and price reductions on essential commodities such as wheat, sugar, oil, and pulses.

Notably, this year’s package aims to distribute these goods without utilizing state-owned utility stores, in an effort to avoid corruption and customer complaints that have plagued previous initiatives.

These combined efforts reflect the government’s dedication to providing relief to consumers during Ramadan, ensuring that essential commodities like sugar remain affordable and accessible to all citizens.
